My Subconscious Responds

Dear conscious mind,

I received your recent letter, but lately you’ve been very busy with all of your constant deciding, and planning, and basking in your own importance. So busy, that I have been completely unable to get your attention. So I thought I would write you a letter of my own.

First of all, let me remind you that you are a great part of our person, with many fine qualities. You are very logical and methodical. Without you we would have never passed those math classes. But, what you seem slow to realize is that we are no longer in math class, we are in the writing room, and in here what I need you to do is to stop your endless critical posturing and let me do my work.

As the creative partner in this firm, allow me remind you that my role here is to invent, and fabricate, and well…create. And I do my part with an ease that you could only dream of, except for the small fact that I do the dreaming as well.

I would think that after all these years of working together, even a pompous ego-fragment like yourself might stumble upon the realization that you simply cannot edit what has not yet been created. But, like a malpractice-destined surgeon attempting to operate on a long distance runner at the mid-point of the Boston Marathon, you continue to race after my beautiful ideas, hoping to dissect them before they have ever had a chance to live. Pathetic does not even begin to describe you.

Anyway, I’ll be working in here, so feel free to wander off and calculate something. I’ll let you know when I’m done.

Sincerely
-Your subconscious.

It is extremely rare, if not unprecedented, that we (ominous comma readers) get to indulge in the complex and intricate workings of the human psyche (unless you are in the funny farm, and clearly you are…not). At least your minds are trying to communicate; perhaps your creativity spawns from the struggle. The rest of us need to concentrate on such meeting of the minds, a level of genius flow rarely achieved. Heck, most “intellectuals” assume their exceptional natural capacity of intellect stems from the conscious mind (subconscious sarcasm at its finest).

Speaking of subconscious sarcasm, I sense a little egoism of its own from your subconscious. Maybe you could threaten him with nightly readings of freakishly Freudian reference books on repressed memories. Maybe a little transcendental meditation would bore him to death (since he is already and expert in that field) and send him running back to you with proper allegiance. Just a thought.

If you do not mind, please allow us the privilege of further glimpses of your minds and maybe Dr. Toboggan could share his viewpoint on your insanity…um…I mean…struggle…no…no…what I meant to say is…challenge (your conscious and subconscious working in perfect synchronicity).

I would have to disagree with your subconscious on a certain point, “…simply cannot edit what has not yet been created.” If that were true then we would have a great multitude of politicians and lawyers out of work.

Debbie,
I have studied up a good deal on the working of the subconscious, not really to write these posts, but in order to coax a little more consistent level of output from that mysterious source of creativity. The whole Cartland / Booth viewpoint, that I linked to in the first letter, is that the subconscious can to programmed like a computer, or ordered around like a dog. On the other hand, Steve Palina believes that the subconscious is smarter than the conscious, because it hold the sum of our collected knowledge, while the conscious can only access a tiny bit of it at a time.

I am thinking about writing a somewhat serious resource article about this whole topic.

What do you think? Would basically non-humorous content “dilute the humor base” of this site or add value for readers?

Lynn,
You are absolutely correct, the whole point of politics seems to be the avoidance of responsibility and, God-forbid, actual work. Your comment reminds me of whole “non-binding congressional motion to protest troop build-up in Iraq” (or whatever it’s actually called) and the way reporters got two week of news from speculating and second guessing a measure that hadn’t even passed yet.

Those reporters are a constant inspiration to me and the work I do here. If they can be so ridiculous without trying, just imagine what I can do with a little focused effort.

Brent, it would definitely add value for the readers. Plus, now my interest is peaked. As soon as my sister and her new husband return from their honeymoon, I plan to introduce the ominous comma. They are both writers and would be very interested in the workings of the subconscious.

We were “warned” after all, in the beginning to expect the unexpected…right? The sky is the limit. Just make sure you follow the serious post with a humorous one…(ominous comma readers) withdrawal is an ugly site and there is no rehab center for it.

Sorry for the double post…not sure how that happened.

Lynn & Brent,

I relish the idea of a decent statesman (my favorite euphemism for politician). Unfortunately, it seems few of our representatives can actually make a decision without “leaking” it to the press as a way to feel out any negative response. Heaven forbid a segment of the population would disagree with a politician and lessen his chance of achieving his own personal political agenda. I think this non-binding resolution to block the troop surge is one of those instances. It’s non-binding for goodness sake, so debate it already and be done with it. Oh, wait, wait, you mean if I do not support this resolution it could make or break my political career?…well, then let’s stall this measure as long as we can. Unfortunately, our troops do not have that option and are dying in the crossfire (pardon the pun.)

I remember when we had knowledgeable leaders who made decisions based on the good of the people. When you leave out the will of the people, we venture down the slippery slope in to fascism. I am not saying, by any means, that our nation is fascist, but if we do not make some changes I fear what our nation could become, especially since we seem to be a corporatist nation. (I love how the conservative news media love to blame the so called “liberal” news media for all of the nations fo-paws (sp?) when in reality the news media is about as liberal as the Republican businessmen that own it.) Corporatism at it’s finest.

Not to rant on about politics… I just do not trust the news media’s accuracy in reporting. Real, factual, accurate news has been replaced by political punditry and it is quite disturbing.

Political satirist’s like John Stewart and Stephen Colbert kind of lessen the “sting” so to speak. I would credit a certian ominous comma creator for that same ability.
