Mr. Comma’s Neighborhood

Welcome to Mr. Comma’s Neighborhood, where we profile some of the more interesting of my web neighbors, at least until the ACLU shows up. So buckle up kids and get ready for the micro-bus tour of amazement.

Fans of scientifical humor will appreciate right-brain / left-brain mid-air collision of XKCD. Not since the Far Side has there been such powerful combination of abstract humor, charm, and geek appeal.

Although metric boatloads of people already know about this immensely popular site, if I can reach just one more with the good news, it will be worth all the long seconds of typing I have endured to write this.

Godsylla is another recent discovery of mine. Although evidence exists to indicate that her blog has been in operation since 2004, I will be sticking to my own personalized corollary of the quantum uncertainty principle, which states that if I wasn’t there to see it, then it doesn’t really count. A favorite post of mine is Beowulf vs. Godsylla in which she publishes a hilarious version of that lit class classic as rewritten by Tom Weller in his book Culture Made Stupid.1

…Heoro cwyc geten heold…..wiþ fæmed half-nelson
Ond flyng him lic frisbe…..bac to fen
Beowulf belly up…..to meaddehæle bar,
Sæd, “Ne foe beaten…..mie færsom cung-fu.”
Eorderen cocca-cohla……yce-coeld, ðe reol þyng…

Mr. Weller has a website here but much of his work is sadly out of print and poorly web-represented.

Next up is Spooky’s Blog. I love this site. His low resolution, single panel cartoons with their subtle animation are genuinely funny.

It feels like he is illustrating chapters from my life. Except for the hemorrhoid one, I’m not claiming that one at all.

Finally, we have Scrambled Toast. Brad Shorr and crew present this excellent thinker’s blog. If you are not an excellent thinker you can still visit, but there will be an inconvenience charge for patronizing you. I am particularly fond of his review of this site, which further displays the author’s discernment, panache, and all around good taste in web-borne entertainment.

So there you have it boys and girls, several new friends for you to visit, courtesy of the Ominous Author and his arrogant confidence in the loyalty of his readers

  1. No, Weller did not write Beowulf, some Danish guy did. Did you skip high school altogether? «

Brent, I couldn’t agree with you more. Your taste and discernment know no equal.

Hello Spooky fan. Love the xkcd comics. Will check the other sites later.

And by the way, Spooky’s coleslaw method works.

Love the Care Bear Stare. I have often found no equal to its power.

Lynn 05.25.07 at 9:29 pm

The Care Bear Stare is a rather spooky powerful wonder.

Brad,
I guess I was a little vague about whose culturally discriminating taste I was referring to. (Yours) But since I have mentioned discrimination, we had better clear out before the ACLU shows up again. I thought I would never get rid of them this morning.

Population of Solar Peoples,
Thank you for your visit. As King James used to say, “my quiver is full,” not to mention my house, so I will be skipping the coleslaw from now on. But thanks for the tip.

Anonymous,
What’s a Friday without a visit from you.

Debbie,
We miss you.

Lynn,
What have done with her?

Spooky’s Blog seems at first to be uninteresting but it grew on me as I watched each toon unfold. It really is a great concept.

Thanks for turning me onto some interesting blogs. :)

Martine 05.26.07 at 7:43 am

Very interesting blog indeed. Everything that does not “have” to be followed by everybody is great with me.

Individuals in what we should be, with sometimes common tastes and ideas, sharing those and discussing them is what I find interesting, but why all think the same at the same time on the same site ???

Brent 05.26.07 at 11:24 am

Chris C,
That was my first reaction as well. Like a joke written in glow-in-the dark ink on a restroom stall in a massive power failure, it takes time for his quirky and understated sense of humor to register. Without the unpleasant aroma and blind fumbling for the exit of course.

I am pleased to share it with you.

Martine,
I’m glad you like the Comma, I am rather fond of it myself.

I agree with you that it is unrealistic to expect everyone to like the same thing. It is people’s individuality that makes life interesting.

I have, what I’m told, is an unusual sense of humor and every couple of weeks I like to take a break from writing original material and share the work of others that make me laugh, in order to spotlight deserving blogs and hopefully put together a community of thoughtful/thought-provoking humorists.

I find that as much as everyone wants to be unique, it is good to know people that share your aesthetic, and who’s very presence encourages you that there is an audience out there somewhere for what you do.

With “you” in this case meaning me.

Thanks for visiting the Coma, return any time. How about five minutes from now?

Brent 05.27.07 at 7:50 am

You are quite welcome. Come back soon.

Beowulf made me smoke vegetation. It was agony. Thanks for the Post Traumatic Beowulf Stress Disorder.

Speedcat Hollydale 05.27.07 at 11:38 pm

You are a PRO at this!

Brent 05.27.07 at 11:58 pm

Sher,
I can get you a discount on therapy if you like.

Speedcat,
If you mean I am a Primadonna Research Objector, that does describe me pretty well, but if you’re saying I am a Potty Releasing Orifice, I am going to have to disagree.

I am far too anal retentive for that.

But thank you anyway.

How did I miss a post?

My favorite Care Bear movie is “Journey to Joke – a – Lot” with Funshine Bear (I have a 4 year old). It is kind of relevant here in that the main care bear character is searching for a home better suited to his sense of humor.

“Dismayed that his friends cannot appreciate his sense of humor, Funshine Bear leaves Care-a-lot to travel to Joke-a-lot so he can share his jokes with some new friends. Saddened at his friend’s departure, Tenderheart launches a search for Funshine Bear that will find the merry jokester forced to choose between a land where fun is elemental or a comfortable home with friends who care.”

(Don’t forget to check out the awesome Soundtrack as well)

Lynn 05.29.07 at 10:22 pm

See Brent. I did not do anything with Debbie. She was busy watching the Care Bear movie. Not even your brilliance compares!

Brent 05.30.07 at 7:01 am

That’s okay, I know when I am beaten.

I mean who can compete with fuzzy effeminate little darlings anyway?
