In the spirit of the holiday weekend, I thought I might share a live public address that I gave several years ago in Memphis about the role of dependence and independence in the lives of spiritual people.
Considering that it is me, jokes are provided but it’s not really comedy. It’s long, about 45 minutes, and I’m still trying to figure out how to make it downloadable, so it’s sort of stuck to this page. Sorry.
I use some strong language, offensive to atheists and churchy types alike, as I take to task the hypocritical christian culture that confuses so many with marketing and formulas and thick layers of artificiality, so be warned.
Due to a possibly slumbering sound tech, it starts in the middle of sentence but I think it will be alright.
This is it here:
Happy Saturday,.

Interesting. It wasn’t what I was expecting, at all.
I do like your comparison of not being able to find the bottom of the ocean with your feet and dependence.
I’ve just recently have been a new reader here.
I like your site. :)

Thank you very much.
People have a hard time feeling that they are “in over their head.” The truth is that we spend most of our time that way.
These last couple posts are part of my irregular swing into almost serious material, it won’t be long until the pendulum calls me back to funnier things.
Come back anytime.
I like a mixture of both ‘fluff’ and ’stuff’.
I get bored with too much of either one, so let the pendulum swing.
And then swing again.
And again.
;)

I agree, let the pendulum swing.
We are gaining momentum as we speak.
Nice work, it must take a while to prepare for something of that length.
Thanks Alex, the hardest part is actually doing research rather than just making stuff up.
I looked at the page source and deciphered the odd looking code.
It is downloadable at
http://www.ominouscomma.com/audio/Dependence.mp3
Depending on your browser settings, you might need to right click and choose “save link as” or “save target as” or something similar. That’s only necessary if you have quicktime, or some other plugin that auto plays files rather than downloading them. If you don’t, then you can just click the link and save it.
Ah, I see. Your plugin automatically hides the url.
Start with http://ominouscomma.com/
Then manually add
audio/Dependence.mp3
Let’s see if that will work or if that gets nuked too.
Wow, you threw us a curveball here.
Brent, you should be proud of me as I listened to the entire 45 minutes without too much squirming. Your “strong” language is not offensive AT ALL, just not what I am used to.
Mixed with passion and humorous rationality, your frank declamation was enjoyable. While I do not identify with much of what you said; I am beginning to understand the wide variations in Christian thought (as well as other religions) and your plea to get back to the basics (not the best choice of words here but you get the idea).
Brent, this is excellent. Thanks for this.
You have received link love from CCS.
Debbie I am proud of you,
I was squirming myself and wondered several times out loud, “When will this guy ever shut up?”
(If self-heckling ever becomes an Olympic event I feel confident that I’ll make the team.)
However, these are the things I feel strongly about, and I appreciate your attentiveness.
No luck so far but I’ll keep working on it. Maybe a new plugin will do.
Thanks for your help Fiar. I’m still not out of the woods, but I’m sure I’ll figure out something.
Thank you Joel, I appreciate the affection from all your initials.
Excellent work!
I haven’t finished listening, yet.
I DON’T LIKE IT.
Too much dependence I need to learn.
Thank you.
Don’t we all. The good news is that lessons are coming our way all the time, we just need to stop running away and embrace them.
Nice work! Thank you so much.
As always, you rock! Can’t believe that I missed hearing this in person.
I understand that not everyone can make me their number one priority in life…if you can really call that sort of limited existence living.
Seriously though, thank you very much.
Congrat’s Brent for the excellent work.
Thank you, Jeffrey.
